Infection of a Tooth
A tooth infection is not something to take lightly. Infections in your mouth could have devastating effects on your overall health including a risk of death if left untreated. Often times you can see a tooth form a cavity before infection sets in, but it is a good idea to visit your local dentist at least twice a year to fix, repair, or remove the risk of infection.
Risk of Infection
Another reason for a tooth extractions is the possible risk of tooth infection. Maybe an infection has not set in yet but without removing the tooth infection could set in. Some patients choose to have a tooth removed rather than have a root canal or other procedure, typically for cost savings reasons. We do advise you to think about future cost of having a tooth removed such as needing a false tooth or partial to cover the empty area. Keep in mind your teeth can shift if gaps are not addressed.
Crowded Mouth
If you do not have room in your mouth for all your teeth, your dentist might find it necessary to make room. In most cases braces or aligners might be necessary to correct the positioning of your teeth. Wisdom teeth are the most common teeth to remove to reduce the risk of overcrowding.
Damage to a Tooth
Tooth extractions might be necessary if a chipped or damaged tooth is beyond repair. Other procedures could substitute the need for a tooth extraction such as a crown. Keeping your tooth is typically the ideal solution.
Wisdom Teeth
What are wisdom teeth? They are your teeth that form behind your last molar. Wisdom teeth are often removed due to an overcrowded mouth. As wisdom teeth start to develop, typically in the adolescent years, they can push your teeth forward and cause all your teeth to move. Your South Fallsburg Dentist can determine if your mouth is large enough to hold your wisdom teeth.
